The engine and the star has always given me a good impression since I was a kid. If you use mercedes as a taxi, it means dependabilitiy. ( back in the 60's ).

A Merc is a Mercury. Depends on what you mean by better. MBs used to be better if better meant durable, repairable, long lasting, but all that's gone now.
mercury ????? what ??? never heard of it mate .... your on the wrong website.
Mercedes Benz..... remember ? the Dudes who invented the car....
World class automobiles
(dont get mad Im joking ;o)
Friend of my father had a Mercury cougar. Huge beast of a thing ... very cool
I fell in love with German-engineering because of an Audi... and then discovered MB.
Aside from the obviously arguable factors of quality , performance , and prestige , I stay with MB because of the timeless beauty. Unlike other luxury alternatives, it fits my visual and tactile preferences - knowing that I will still love the way it looks and feels in +10-years. MB aesthetics withstand the test of time and fickle fads.
The MB heritage is authentic. I find most of the competitor offerings to be precise replicas of "luxury" yet lacking visceral soul. There is nothing ersatz about MB luxury.

In my opinion, a lot of people buy Mercedes because of prestige. Most cars today are reasonably safe and reliable. Mercedes spends a lot of money associating itself with people who have money. They are at tennis matches and fashion shows. MB does in my opinion have a good blend of performance, comfort and luxury. But if you want a car with status, if you own a MB you can only go down in my opinion. How much that matters if at all only the individual buyer can decide.
Is not better than other cars (not all, of course). We believe it's better. Or say it's better. And all just because we love this car. We like everything. The name, the sign, the seats, body car, headlights, everything. In three words "We Like Merz." That's all
I live in Mexico also, and I haven't heard anyone in the rally, vintage, sport world call them Merc, in such case of finding a diminutive it's commonly Benz, or "Meche" (as a nick).
the MB such a background of "wealth", dependability, automotive history, etc is solid based. Result: The MB logo is the second best recognized logo all over the world. What makes MB so interesting is that for diametrally opposed reasons their owners love their cars, on one side it can be for ex-reliability reasons (used as taxis), and for others it may be because the car reflects a "false" idea of it economical situation.
That doesn't mean in any way for me that MB's are the most reliable cars, indeed even AMG's are specially due to malfunctions. Reliability for me is a matter of the past on Benzies, and haven't had the best experience with mine in that matter, even though I love it.
Anyway, a Benz will always have that special feeling for me, kind of even a "soul" that gives their cars a liitle bit of "extra" while driving them besides commuting.
I think in our days what makes Mercedes Benz keep that general status is: 1.- MKT and 2.- so many wonderful top end beasts (but deffinately not the whole line-up).
For me the best handling/fun overall premium cars are BMW's, just starting with the SO WONDERFUL 50-50 weight distribution, for interiors... AUDI, for dependability (anything dependant on Toyota, Honda or Subaru)... and for feeling and comfort MB's.
(focusing in what I've driven)
