Which car do you have? If it is any of the more recent models, you would not be able to make a copy (except for the metal key).
You should order a new key and have the lost one disabled. The one who found your old key would still be able to get into the car with the metal key but could not drive it or disarm the alarm. If you are afraid of that, you would have to change the door locks and the one old metal key.
The dealership should be able to make a copy for you if you provide them with the VIN. I assume they will also ask you for proof of ownership. They were able make a new key for my slk that way. It cost $125 or so.
Yes for any year model, you can bring your VIN and proof of ownership to the dealership. The keys are all cut and programmed(if needed) in texas. They are then shipped to your dealer and usually takes about 3 days.
