Noobie "COMAND" question - HALP!

Hi there!

Im new here and firstly wanted to say hello to everyone here.

I have a 2004 CLK and its a great car but i have a problem.

You see, the COMAND is in Japanese and while i can read it just fine, i want to export the car back to Australia next year and obviously i cant very well have the system set to Japanese now, can i?

Not only that but obviously the Navi is in Japanese as well.

My question im hoping some of you can help me out on is two fold...

Firstly, is it possible to change the language on the Comand so that all info comes out in English?

And secondly, is there a way to change the navi so that it can accept Aussie maps or am i stuck with a navi that will only be able to read the japanese landscape.

These cars were sold locally in Australia so i have a sneaking suspicion its possible but im not an expert on these matters, you guys are!

Looking forward to receiving some favorable responses.

You probably have the COMAND with the Japanese option code 498 which should be different from the Euro COMAND which again should be the one normally installed to Australian cars. Quite possible that the only option to make this speak English is to change the unit (but you would have to check if the wiring is compatible).

With your car VIN one could try to decode which parts are common. Perhaps the navigation processor is the same.

Miroj would be from Australia and is a real expert on these issues, perhaps you can try to reach him.

G'day! Thanks for leaving a reply for me.

Who is Miroj??

Is he the guy who wrote the comand FAQ?

option code 498? Sorry mate, youve lost me...

So...if i buy an Aussie COMAND and its the same as the Euro COMAND then i can switch the Japanese unit provided the wiring is the same?

Sounds like an option to me but id really love to know if there is a way i can do it for cheap or even better, for free!

Please get back to me with any info you have, id love to hear it

"miroj" is a forum member here, very experienced with complex retrofit projects. You may want to perform a search for posts from that user. I guess he would prefer doing some business in addition to helping. I cannot promise anything of course but you could PM him.

If you have your vehicle data card, you see all the options it has. On a Japanese car I would expect COMAND with option code 498 listed. If you don't have a data card, you can pull it from EPC, or for this car probably from the Russian site:
Mercedes-Benz Club Russia | Mercedes-Benz / VIN

I did not have a look at the wiring diagrams. It is not obvious that the wiring harness would be the same for Japanese market cars with that of European ones. Everything can be done but it becomes more complicated if the wiring isn't at least mostly the same.

On European units you have a selection of supported languages. Since the buttons on a Japanese unit are not really readable for us (are they?), it could be there is no English language option. I really don't know this.
