Interpreting a Carfax

Hello,

I have a 1988 560 SL with a carfax that starts like this:

04/24/1995 38,627 Title issued or updated

Illinois
Motor Vehicle Dept.
Lake Forest, IL
Title #E

How do you interpret this ? How come the carfax does not start with 0 miles ?
Does that happen often ?

best regards
Chris

CarFax isn't the bible on any vehicle and is only as good as the database that they bought their information from.

CarFax is also notably weak on cars that are more than 10-15 years old, before records became computerized. I know of several vehicle which CarFax reports as "clean" that have been involved in substantial accidents, repaired by dealerships or shops prior to 1990.

Agree, they also based all their reports to DMV data bases also ie; accident records...etc. meaning if there's no report by the current owner carfax will never document it.
