And now back to our original subject:

The better Benz is an "older one". There is a big difference between my W202 and W203. The two are only a few years apart, but I can just imagine the difference between models that are many years apart. It's not that the W203 is not a good car (in may ways much better than the rest on the road today), but it does not feel as "solid' as an older Benz.

During the 70's, I was stationed in Greece. To this day I still remember Taxi drivers pushing their Benz's to line up for the next customer (saving gas). One Taxi driver told me that they only buy a Mercedes because the car would last a long, long time. Almost all Taxis were Mercedes Benz at that time in Greece. I wonder if it's still true tuday.

I was in Germany in the late 80's and I recall them using the Benz as a taxi. Consumer Reports would agree that the older models were better as well. I read alot about Mercedes slow downfall in reliability and rising repair costs. But from mechanics I know I also hear how some people put soo much faith in their Benz that they neglect to stay on top of the maintenance. For one I have my oil changed every six months regardless of how much the car is driven, and especially in the winter, and that ain't much. P.S. Could be a fetish. I do treat that car better than I treat most women. lol.

Ladies! My Mercedes! Holds 3 in the back, 2 if ya fat.

Never a truer word spoken. If people maintained their cars on time then half the repairs we do would not be required. I have one customer who owns a W220 S320 and its a 2000 model with over 200,000 on the clock and its in fantastic condition. ps I will have it listed as a fettish

Unhappy Change of mind !

Well with what I've been told by this & other forums I've cancelled the sale on my W210 (Just have to take the hit on my lost deposit). I just couldn't risk so much money on a potential money pit. Guess I'll have to stick to my bland yet trouble free Toyotas. Maybe I'll get the courage to look at another MB in the future?

Sad to hear we put you off the purchase, but I think you would hate us more if we lied to you. Give that sales guy shit for me, the lying turd.

Don't hate you guys at all, after all the reason I joined your forum was for advice on my W210 purchase. Been so long since I last owned a MB ,I didn't realise there had been a period of wilderness years were quality had become so terrible. I have nothing but gratitude for your honest opinions. Will have to do more research in future,I wrongly presumed that MB had kept up their standards. The points raised don't seem to have been passed on to various guides I'd checked.(Will stick to owner forums for my research.) Thanks again guys, Flexy7 xx

All that being said, maybe MB found a way to make a car that is better than the sum of its parts. All I know is that when you look at the E series from the late nineties to the present you see a lot more anecdotal evidence for decreased quality during the time they were Daimler-Chrysler.

Again, just my $.02
I guess it is poor form to quote oneself but some further info on MB as it relates to product testing by Consumer Reports. Latest Issue of April 2008 just got it yesterday.
