will not start

hi all
i have an '83 mercedes 240d (sedan)
the other day i began having problems starting her when she is cold. the engine rotates, but will not start. after four or five times she starts, when engine is warm starts fine as well. i checked and cleaned battery connections, and the battery is new.
any suggestions?
my glow plug light comes on as normal, but maybe they need replacing??
could my drive belt have anything to do with this? i had an pretty bad oil leak for a while and i know it leaked all over my drive belt. . .
when it does start there is a puff of white smoke and it sputters briefly
thanks =)

Sorry, I don't have an answer. You might also want to post your question on the W123 subforum. More people who are knowledgeable about your can might see it. Good luck.

First - do not ever use starting fluid.

Second - do a search - lots of good info. Things like testing your glow plugs would be first on my list. Takes about ten minutes with an ohm meter. Good plugs read about 0.7 ohms. Also, when was the last time a valve adjustment was done? What weight oil are you using? Do you/can you use the block heater? There's more after we know these answers.

Does the user name refer to Maui? I would assume a block heater would not be needed in that case

White smoke does not sound good, head gasket leaking? But would it make the car difficult to star? If not, then perhaps a fuel filter issue?
