Opinion on:Greatest Engineered German Car?

I was curious as to The Forum's opinion on the greatest German engineered car; make, model, and year? I have owned quite a few vehicles and have always leaned toward German engineered vehicles. In my opinion they provide the best overall value of ownership. I grew up with my Father always saying that,” A Mercedes Benz was the greatest engineered vehicle of my time", he is now 76 years old. I welcome your thoughts on the subject.

Here are my two:

Aren't British the leaders in highest car engineering?
Or do you want to talk German only?
I still consider the W123 and W126 the best engineered cars of 20 Century. Mechanically Germans build excellent cars in 21 Century as well, but stained them with unreliable electronics.

Definitely a difficult question, but I agree with Kajtek1 and would like to add the W124 to his list. Another sleeper might be the W201; the "lowly" 190 in other words. I don't know how much their owners are spending to keep them on the road, but I see them everywhere and most look like they are in good shape.

Right! For me, the W126 [especially the coupe], W107, W116, and also the baby benz, the lowly 190 (W201) along with it's bigger brother the W124.

Benzes are no doubt greatly engineered, but I have to say vw is up there as well especialy MK2 85-92 models golf and jettas for the price you get a very descent german engineered vehicle the motors are pretty much bullet proof I own 3 of them currently and I beat the crap out them they take it all, overheated one and still no head gasket problems or nothing.

Mercedes has been in the lead since the beginning, i.e. when it invented the car.

The greatest engineered is always the current S-class (Maybach being based on it, too.)

W124 gets my vote here, closely followed by the ubiquitous W201. The W202 is the Benz slacker and should be sent to reform school.
