Service Records

Purchased an 89 300SE, one owner MB with 120,000 miles. Love the car. Drives like a dream. Unfortunately there was no owners manual or service records. Just wondering if there is any way I can find out what service has been done. Timing chain and guides?

My Benz was used and I asked the original selling dealer for what had been done. They were more than willing, at no cost to me, to provide a printout of everything done under warranty and also what the customer paid for. At the very least, you can obtain from most dealers a copy of the VMI (vehicle master inquiry) which will tell you everything dealers have done to the car nationally.

My local dealer refused to give me the printout of the records, that they already had, on the privacy base. I didn't pay for the service, previous owner did, so he is the one entitled to them.
Obviously when nobody is complaining they can stretch the line.
BTW Musikman. Looks like 2 of us have too much time on our hands and we sit on this forum on Saturday night. I have sick wife and rain outside. What is your excuse?

Kajtek1, My GF is at her home 200 miles away this weekend so I have a break. Weather is not good either, it's cold outside (30s). My best wishes that your wife is better soon!

I have heard that privacy excuse on here before, and think it is BS. I am in healthcare and privacy is over done there too in my opinion.

you have to see if the dealer that you bought it even serviced the car, sometimes the owner may have done stuff outside of benz. a VMI will only show what was done under warranty, it will not shows services or customer pay work.

Officially, Mercedes records will only record Warranty repairs or Recall service, not whether the oil was changed or the tires rotated.

Most dealerships do track work they did on customer cars, but they are not required to divulge that information to subsequent buyers. That's really a function of how friendly the dealership service department is. For older cars, you can imagine that there won't be computer records, just paper invoices, if that.
