EGR Valve...OE only? 94/e320

Dear Experienced Ones,
I need a new EGR valve for my 94/e320. I don't know much about the part. Can I use a less-expensive after-market one (there's quite a difference in price) or will the cheap simply become expensive? Also, please, would cleaning the valve / system help buy some time?
Thanks

I hate it when people answer my questions with a question - but nevertheless what is the evidence that you need a new EGR valve? Has it specifically been tested or are you just getting the EGR fault code? A failed EGR valve is far less common on your car than is a clogged EGR pipe.

Hi deanyel. I didn't know you asked a question or I didn't know I answered it. Send me the link I'd love to read it. I looked a bit for the EGR answer before I asked but didn't find what I was looking for, maybe I didn't read enough. To answer your question, (my friend is the Benz expert, I'm a wannabe) we got a EGR fault code after the check engine light came on. I take it we should try cleaning the EGR pipe first? There I go again, another question. Thanks!

Most likely a clogged pipe. Try a search - lots of info. The pipe snakes around from the EGR valve then behind the engine and to the intake side - hard to follow but possible. You need to disconnect both ends and runs a flex cable through it, something like a speedo cable. There is a redesigned pipe, less likely to clog, but installing it requires taking off the intake manifold, somewhat easier job just to clean out the old one.

OEM EGR valves are most definitely available for a substantial savings compared to your friendly neighborhood dealer.
