... does the noise sound like it happens in only one side? back last year we had a e class in with a slight clunk sound in the front end ... what we ended up doing was swapping the entire spring/shock assembly out with a different model with sport suspension or vis versus, i cant remember if the car was sport or regular but anyway the noise went away. it was determined that the noise was cause by the length of the strut. i remember the car but the details are slim as it was at the end of 06.
Thanks for the informative reply, Streeglower ... well, the sound is in the front, and kinda on both sides (if it were the spring/shock assembly could be either side, huh?) - actually, mine are struts in the front - but the one thing the MB Dealer said was that they were not adjusted properly and he could not figure out why someone would put these Bilsteins on this E320.
Another really good suspension tech in town looked at it, and said the Bilsteins were not adjustable, and that MB was just trying to get me to buy a whole new factory assembly. He said they looked fine to him ... he even climbed into the engine compartment and road that way while another person drove slowly, touching components to see if he could feel where it might be coming from. He ultimately could not locate the problem.
He said the struts and springs looked good, but hey ... maybe he was wrong too. He seemed knowledgeable though.
I bet that is expensive to change out the springs & struts, huh? The one tech did say I had the sport suspension, but I didn't know I did (how would I know???) - so I guess it does. Would the after market Bilsteins supposed to be adjustable?
He was adament though that the bushings and joints were not causing the noise. But remember ... I can touch the breaks, and the noise won't occur, most times - unless there is a significant vertical movement. Also, there is that "flexing" feeling I can feel in the steering wheel while going down/around an off ramp with breaks ...
So, it seems to me, that if the pop occurs with a vertical movement, then it would be with something that moves vertical - like a strut. But the dealer I bought the car from put these Bilsteins on here brand new - maybe they are not installed properly?
This is so frustrating ... again, that one tech said they looked fine to him, and that he had seen many Bilstein struts.
I'm going to search the Forums for something along the lines of what you were talking about - maybe I will find it. I need HELP!!! LOL
