Penske MB service center is bulls**t

Took my SLK into West Covina service department about 2 months ago because A/C was not getting cold. I have StarMark extended warranty and was hopeful it was covered. The service assistant told me there was no way of knowing if it was covered until after they inspected it and that if it was not covered I would be obligated to pay either a $75 "inspection fee" or the cost for parts and labor to fix car. I was reluctant to agree to this, but I assumed it would be covered and if it wasn't then oh well I would just have to shell out the $75 or get it fixed. Ended up being covered and all was well.

Flash forward to this afternoon. I took my car in because just recently the convertable top warning light and buzzer has been going off after I open or close my roof and only after I've been driving for some time. I again assumed this would be covered by my warranty. And again they could not tell me if it was or not until after they did the inspection, but this time the "inspection fee" would be $242. I asked them why the jump in fees and they explained inspecting the convertable mechanism is a very complex and time consuming job. I said, I could understand that (even though I think this is bs, I know they aren't going to inspect every bolt, they'll just check computer and sensors), but could they just please tell me if it would be covered by my warranty. They said no. So possible outcomes were 1.) sign on the line and get very lucky by finding out it is covered by warranty or 2.) find out it's not covered get stuck for a bill for at least $242 just to have nothing done to it. If they then had to repair anything the price would surely go up ($120/hr labor).

I spoke with the general manager and he would not do anything for me, not even honor the original $75 fee from last time. I'm sorry, but this just seems like a very sneaky system by MB to get more money. I'm SURE they know if this issue is covered by my warranty or not from the get go, but will not tell me. Also, I'm sure hooking a laptop to my car to see what sensors are failing is not worth $242. Just ridiculous.

I now can see why that service center is HUGE. It's an entire seperate business based on ripping people off. They have 72 bays.....72 BAYS for god's sake and it was packed. This has to be embarassing for MB. I'm anxious to sell this car and get away from this un-professional customer service.

Go somewhere else!! There isn't only one MB dealer in the world. Don't expect wonders from one of the most unreliable and repair prone MB model years made.

A 2002 "StarMark"? You don't have a Mercedes-Benz warrantee, do you? More specifically, this isn't covered by a Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned waranty, is it? What makes me wonder? The ENTIRE AC system is covered under CPO. Ditto for the folding roof. Sensors, hydraulics, switches, EVERYTHING. Unless the car has accident damage, a dealer will fix the folding roof.

Do you have a third party warrantee that's called "StarMark"? Are you worried "your" insurance company won't pay? If so, is that really Mercedes-Benz' problem? If the repair is not covered by the third party warrantee company, should Penske inspect the car for free? If there's a chance you may have to pay for anything, isn't Penske required by law to inform you beforehand?

They aren't saying "give us some start up money", they're saying "if the repairs aren't covered by *your insurance company* , its going to cost *you* a certain amount". That's why you won't go up the street to Rusnak Mercedes, isn't it? If I'm wrong, please, post back. Otherwise, I hope both you and the buyer are happy with the sale.

It is a factory Mercedes Benz extended warranty purchased from MB through MB. It is called their "StarMark" extended warranty and it is the highest end warranty you can buy. I have the receipts and it was a few thousand dollars purchased a couple years after the car was purchased from original dealership.

By the way, I took 10 minutes of my time tonight to troubleshoot the warning light issue and discovered if I pushed on the trunk lid and looked inside car the light would turn off. I loosened 2 screws and relieved some tension on the trunk lid where it seals to rear of window and all is fixed. I'm very glad I finally figured this out....no thanks to Penske West Covina!

Well I apologize for thinking you had *another* warranty. On the R170 forum, another poster specifically asked if you had a Mercedes-Benz CPO. You said "NO". The link is here and your response was as follows:

The fact that you stated you had a "Tri Star warranty" and that it was "just like a Mercedes-Benz factory warranty" sounded like something other than a CPO. I suppose what you really meant was, "yes, I have a CPO warranty". I'm not sure what "tri star" and "just like" are supposed to mean, but if you now say you have a CPO, you would know better than anyone else.

understand that your advisor does not know if the part is covered or not. neither does the tech. once the issue is diagnosed then the tech has to look up the coverage on that part.

the reason why the advisor ask for diag up front is because if your part is not covered, then the tech needs to be paid for his time. and starmark warranty does not pay for diag. there have been time when i have spent hrs diagnosing a problem then find out the part is not covered and then the customer doesnt want it.

I also had the Starmark warrenty and I my case they even replaced a puntured tire! I think Penske is ripping you off. The top is covered and so should everything be excluding normal wear and tear.

If I understand the situation correctly, the term "Starmark" is obsolete, having been replaced with the CPO designation. I think the coverages are quite similar. If I may, I'd like to recommend the factory CPO warranties in general.

Under mine, and thus far, I have the squeaky steering wheel issue fixed, and the COMAND/NAV and rain sensing windshield wiper sensor replaced at no cost to me. I think these repairs/replacements would have cost $5000 if not under the CPO warranty. 12 months/100,000 miles came with the 52,000 mile car and I opted to extend to 24/100,000 for an extra $2400 because I figured the extra months would be worth the extra money. Maybe I lucked out, and I might not do this again, but I'm happy with the outcome.

Not just 02's (and 01's and several years after) had crappy reliability.
