Engine judder

Wander if anyone can help, I have a 1998 E320 saloon (auto) with 78,000 miles and a full history. It has developed a rather annoying problem when under hard acceleration (overtaking etc).
When you accelerate hard the revs build nicely to 4000/4500 rpm when all of a sudden the car begins to judder like a bugger and it won't accelerate through the problem (or past 4500rpm) if you keep the accelerator pedal down. It feels almost as if the engine is being starved of something i.e. fuel/air.
Strangely though if you hold it in 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc and accelerate gently it will go past 4000/4500 rpm with no problem
I would be most grateful if anyone could give me some advice on this one.

You have to start somewhere and I would advice four wheel balance as it sounds like you have a bent wheel. From what you have posted it will most probably be a rear wheel.

I'd have the cats checked. If they've collapsed internally, the symptoms would be as you've described.
