Origin of this W124

Hi all,

I am looking into purchasing my first E320 Sportline, which apparently has been imported from South Africa.

When I asked the current owner of the vehicle to send me its VIN, the number he sent, started with "A" instead of the usual "W". Naturally, when I ran VIN decoder, it didn't return anything, until I replaced "A" with "W".

Now my question is, were there any W124s build in South Africa or did the owner simply make a mistake ?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a 'Nigerian' scam.

I would suggest that any vehicle that you aren't purchasing from a reputable dealer MUST have a clearly identifiable history -- VIN should lead to a carfax report of at least some dealer history. Otherwise -- don't buy it! You don't know if the car was stolen and re-VIN'd, especially from overseas. If the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is! I have bought a number of vehicles off of Ebay, and I routinely come across scammers trying to sell vehicles they don't own, others at 25% of the actual value of the car wholesale. Just walk away. This may not be the case for you, but it all starts with your first impression - and if you already feel something isn't right, it's not!
Good luck!

No, it is not. THe car has officially been imported from SA by one of the owners and has all the Australian compliance tags, so the car is legit.

I was just wondering, if any W124 were ever produced in SA. I know, most of the C-class these days, are.
