Spare a thought for poor old me out here in West Africa with an AMG engine which requires premium unleaded but I can only purchase unleaded regular because that is all that is available.

I shudder to think what it is doing to my engine and how long my engine will last at this rate!

I have not noticed any side effects just yet (cars been using unleaded regular for 2 months now) except that it does 8-9 miles to the gallon city and 13-14 highway
When the knock sensor senses pre-ignition, the ECU retards timing and enriches the air-fuel mixture as well. So yes, gas mileage will suffer but the ECU will protect your engine from damage. You still want to watch out for engine knock especially during low RPM partial throttle situation.

In your neck of the woods, a diesel is probably best.

Most of these brands are not available in east central Florida, but prices are pretty much the same, regardless of brand, except for shell, which runs $.20/gal more for premium. I usually buy Sunoco, which is the cheapest major brand. The station I use also has 100 octane racing fuel. I was considering putting in a tankful just to see if there was any difference in performance or mileage. When I saw the price was $9.00/gal, I changed my mind!
BTW: I go from Florida to Pennsylvania once or twice a year. Sunoco is one of the most expensive gasolines up there; strange for a Pennsylvania company.
