But 1.5%+ overall net profit for the dealers is not outrageous.

Then it is the expectation of the customer and the current way of selling and servicing the cars that cost arm and a leg.

In the SJ Mercury, there was an article about the $2500 Indian Tata Nano. In order to compete with Tata at this kind of price point, other car manufacturers are thinking how to restructure the selling and servicing process in addition to making the cars cheap.

That will be the day we will drive up to a machine, plug it to the car, swipe our credit card, push a few buttons and drive it onto a conveyor.

As it is when you see all those employees running around the dealership, the free coffee, ride to work (or loaner car); we are paying for all of them. The nice guy who takes care of you and your car also takes Hawaiian vacations, skiing trips and see the same dermatologist as you. The guy that took me to the office one day was a retired geologist.

I assume you are an industry insider...
What's the latest on the auto business nowadays ?
Is retail traffic slowing down at the MB dealers ? Are loans harder to get ?

I have no idea. I'm just a customer, not an "industry insider..."

Don't believe everything you think

Yep and my taxi driver in London had vacationed in California too. It's a small world.

Some of those people running around the dealership are useful.

They are useful all right, also costly too. You get what you paid for. Or is it the other way around, you pay for what you got?

Agreed, you paid for what you got.

Mostly a overpriced but decent rental car and some lousy but very expensive coffee. But the Mercedes CPO warranty will keep me visiting with the constant stream of minor defects to repair on the ML every 13K miles, minimum. and that's when the dealer can show some expertise occasionally. I will compare and use both local dealers here, using one for the C300 and the other for the ML350.

I do like the longish service intervals and the factory fill with Mobil1 synthetic, that really makes a lot of sense.

an oil change for my CL 500 is $100.00 and is only about $70.00 if I do it my self. pads are only $38.00 a pair. I hate saying it but MB service are the biggest rippoff artists in town. find a reputable outside shop that works on these cars or do it your self if you can.
