Looking at a MB 190D for a nice Daily Driver

Hey guys,

Not a MB owner but really thinking about picking up an old 1987 190D non-turbo.

Here's the guys ad description

got a 1987 Mercedes 190d for sale.
I was offering it earlier for $3200 however the transmission just got an 1800$ complete overhaul job therefore I had to raise the price to 3800 FIRM

5cyl 2.5L non-turbo bulletproof diesel engine with 275K kms on it (if you do some research you will find that these engines last for way over 500k)
4 speed automatic transmission (just overhauled)
Rock solid body (all older mercedes were made with galvanized steel)........YOU WILL NOT FIND A SPOT OF RUST ON IT
Dark red leather interior in perfect shape.
power windows, mirrors, locks etc.
Cd player
Brand new MVI
rotors and pads were changed on all 4 wheels a month ago
14" alloy wheels with winter tires

Car starts without a problem at -10 C even without block heater being plugged in.

CAR GETS over 40 MPG (~ 6L/100km) IN THE CITY
and if that's not enough it can be easily converted to burn WVO (waste vegetable oil)

pictures have been taken on the day the ad was posted

So I don't really believe his 40MPG claim... yes I'm sure you can get that sometimes however I think the car is listed as 30/34 mpg city/hwy

I drive around 400kms a week and a diesel like this would be nice as it would be a good ride and not too cramped as I'm not a short man!

I'm not afraid of mechanical work as I own and off-road Jeeps but I'm just curious about the typical things I should look for on this 190D

I heard that the power items sometimes fail like windows, locks etc.

Any comments would be good! My alternative would likely be a VW diesel in the mid-90's which is less cool than this Baby-benz

$3800 is high, but after you figure the price of the recent work done it does price out. 40 mpg does sound a little high as you have said. I used to own a 1979 300SD and it got 28 mpg on the freeway. Of course it weighed much more and had old school mechanical fuel injection and high drag aerodynamics.

It looks like a good buy as a commuter car and I might have a Mercedes mechanic look it over just to be safe.

Hi Kilo: Neat car: I missed out on a similiar one a couple of years ago & wish I had gotten it. Please post your above commentary in the w201 section that is specifically for the 190 series vehicles as I suspect you'll get a lot more info & you should also do some digging there yourself.

'87 300E: sold after 11years @ 230k & still on the road somewhere in rural Tennessee.

'94 C220 with 93k totalled 10/06 by hit & run broadsiding monster truck: not a scratch or bruise for me
