Smell of raw fuel

I have a 1989 300E and have noticed the odor of gasoline when I use the heater. Presumably drawing in the odor from the engine compartment, though I cannot find any signs of leaking fuel. Any ideas?

Thanks.

If you have a charcoal cannister/vapor recovery system, those will reek of gas when they fail (and they can fail a number of ways).

If you are a DIY type person take off the air cleaner and check the fuel enrichment valve. it is on the rear side of the fuel injection distributor. Its black, held on by two screws and is 1 inch by 1 inch by two inches. These things develop a leak and since the proximity is relatively near the heater blower it makes sense you are smelling it when the climate control is running. they are simple to change but cost approx $300 from the dealer.

Good luck.
