W210 control arm bushing check

How does one tell when the front lower control arm bushings are in need of replacement? There appear to be hard bushings at the rear of the arm and soft in front. Using a crowbar, the hard do not move at all and the front can be moved but return to center. All look in good shape. I am getting strange tire wear on the inside corners of the front tires, almost on the sidewall. The alignment has been checked twice. Before spending the $600 to replace the bushings I'd like to know how to check them. My car is a 99 with 100k.

I would lift the front of the car, it is pretty difficult to see the wear if the wheels have load. Even the anti-roll bar may make it difficult, that is why it is better to lift the front, or the rear completely.
