Question Gas to Diesel engine swap, can it be done?

I crashed my '96 E300 D (see for sale thread) Just thinking out loud here, I found a cheap high mileage '91 300 TE wagon. Now, can I put my surviving diesel engine (and tranny?) into it and what does everyone think would be involved? Or should I be looking for an E320 of the same year ('96-'99?)? I'm thinking for the TE I'll need custom motor mounts and a custom driveshaft. Or should I forget it!!!! Thanks!

Gasser to diesel engine swap used to be popular at my place, before the W123 era. Aren't these different car models, W210 versus W124, I did not check if these ever used the same engine. In any case, the wiring, fuel lines and many others are different even on the same body, must be a lot of work but hopefully someone has experience and can comment.

The 606 engine was sold in 1994 and 1995 E300 in 124 body style diesels in Non turbo form, same engine as the 1996,1997 e300 "126 model".
I have owned one for about 7 years.
Not sure how they adapted the engine to the 124, It is a great efficent engine with good power and track record.

In the past, while living in Eastern Block I have seen Mercedes diesel engines put into all kind of cars. Starting from gas-guzzling underpowered Volgas, ending on gas-guzzling overpowered Buicks and Fords. Several mechanics could not only manufacture engine mounts, but make plates to accommodate different transmission as well.
Everything can be done, but quite often with present parts to labor relation become non-economical. With newer cars changing electronics can be the biggest hassle.
How much money would you agree to spend on the conversion?

I'm going to spend as little $$$ as possible because I will be doing it myself this spring. I found a 1995 E320 Wagon. I've seen that exact same engine (the diesel) in the 1995 w124 sedans so I think it will swap fairly easily. You can be sure that I'll be measuring and checking the manuals before I move anything. I will post progress reports and pics on this site for those who are interested.

Wallyman: Be sure to pose this same question in the 124 forum as there are bound to be a few nuts out there who have considered & perhaps done exactly what you are considering; they may not even bother reading the general forum.

'87 300E: sold after 11years @ 230k & still on the road somewhere in rural Tennessee.

'94 C220 with 93k totalled 10/06 by hit & run broadsiding monster truck: not a scratch or bruise for me
