2005 c230 brake and rotor change

Do I need any special tools to change the brakes and rotors on a 2005 c230. Is there a place where I can get step by step details? Any tips would be helpful.

Hey, Dune, welcome to the forum. Please complete your BW profile se vehicle and location as that can prove very helpful.
You may not have realized it but there is a forum specific to your W203. Just scroll down the main page and you will see it. Any time you have a question that is about your car in particular that is the best place to post such questions. This general forum is more -- general.
I am certain the folks there will have the knowledge you seek.

You should not have SBC on a c class. For the the pads and rotors you will need a T30 to remove the screw holding the rotors on, a T45 or 8allen(dont remember which) and a 18mm socket, also calipers presses, and a bungie cord to hang the caliper. I also recommend a large hammer to remove the rotor as they are usually rusted on pretty good. To tell if you have SBC the hydraulic unit under the hood with all of the brake lines going out of it will say SBC on it if you have SBC also it will have an accumilator on the bottom of the pump. If you do not have SBC then this unit will only say ESP and will not have an accumilator.

only the e, sl, and cls have sbc so dont worry about that. is your car standard or sport. if its standard you need either a 12mm or 13mm socket for the brake caliper. a 18mm socket for the calipers and a t30 torx for the rotors. and a trusty BFH never hurt for gettin the damn rotors off. other than that its straight forward. only difference for the sprt is you only need a punch and a hammer to remove the pads.

I just made the decision to do my own pads and rotors after getting my quote from the dealership ($675 fronts, $490 rears ... and this was with their monthly special of roughly $75 off) The Indy mechanics were maybe 15-20% less ...

I bought Zimmerman coated cross-drilled rotors and Pagid pads. I got cross-drilled for the rears also -- they look nicer and for the money I was saving through DIY I felt it justified the splurge of $25 extra per rotor. The Pagid pads I got are made in Germany. I've been told they have versions made in the UK and elsewhere, but the ones manufactured in Germany are better.

Approx costs for rear:
* rotors $65 each = $130
* pads $40
* no sensor in rear of 2005 c230
* two packets of brake paste, $4
* a can of brake cleaner and 3 pairs of latex gloves, $5
so under $200.

* rotors $97 each = $200
* pads $65
* sensor $5
* brake cleaner & gloves $5
around $275.

Don't forget some blue LocTite, $6 for a small tube that will last a long time.

I installed the rears last weekend and the fronts yesterday. It took me 2-3 hours per axle, but I had the car on simple jack stands, had to do a lot of crouching, first time through this being extra careful, and spent a lot of the time cleaning as I went. Everything feels good and quiet.
