Just bought a used Mercedes and have a question

Hello to all, I am new to this forum. I just bought a 1993 Mercedes 300D 2.5L turbo diesel. It has 73K miles so I am hoping to make this a long lasting investment. I would like to bring all the maintenance up to speed and was wondering what should I plan to do. Oil change is obvious, but what oil should I use and what is the capacity for this motor with filter change? Anything else I should plan to do right away? Thanks much!!

I would recommend that you
  1. Join the Mercedes-Benz Club of America. You will be eligible for discounts on parts and service from dealers.
  2. Contact Mercedes-Benz USA at 1-800-FOR-MERC and ask for a Service CD for your car. The CDs are inexpensive and have maintenance instructions.

Looks like a user manual would be useful too. The engine oil capacity is mentioned there.

Everyone should buy the service CD in the US where they are so cheap.

I believe you have a w124. I would check out that forum. If you do a search of that forum, I am sure you will find answers to your questions or you could post your questions there.

Welcome -

I've got nothing against the service CD's and DVD's. I have the one for my W210, but if you just want to change the oil/filters and other routine maintenance etc. you will find all the information you need on sites like this one. Some people have even posted DIY procedures with photos! Use the search function in the subforum appropriate to your vehicle. Have fun.

I believe most of the info here comes from the service CDs and DVDs, but of course everyone is free to use either option. In Europe the forum info is almost the only option as the service documents cost thousands of Euros per year.

Some tasks are definitely better described here though, the service documents on the other hand have very few mistakes, less than on the forum posts (could be this one included).

Have fun is right, either way.
