This is so funny. When we bought a C 230 K in 2002 here in Canada, its MSRP was about $3000 LESS than the same car in the USA. Americans were buying cars up here and were POed with M-B USA.

Now, 6 years later, the tables have turned and every Canadian wants a free lunch.

Reality check: the only reason US prices are lower than Canadian prices at this time is the collapse in the US dollar. If you think that M-B USA will be able to continue to make money selling C 300s in the USA for $30,000 CAD, you are wrong. They will be losing money on each car they sell in the USA if they keep doing that.

Prices of the cheaper M-B cars in the USA will have to rise about 15-20% to get back to where they have a normal profit margin. Maybe they will start sourcing more of their cars from Brazil again. We never did get the Brazilian C-Classes in Canada. Or perhaps the US M-B factories will start making C and E Classes. Anyway, the present pricing structure in the USA is temporary, and unsustainable.

That said, it was interesting to see the adjustments made to Canadian pricing, officially for "cash" buyers of their cars. This was announced a week before I got my B 200 and even on that car - not sold in USA - I got $750 off (850 with tax). So there is still some fat in the Canadian MSRPs. By the way, a B-Class equipped identically to mine would cost $7000 CAD MORE in Germany, before tax.

I can see a 5 to 10 percent premium here due to tax rates etc - but the huge difference is plain bull ...
MBUSA and MB Canada both have export restriction clauses on new cars.
