That test is over five years old and I think about it everytime I drive my 1999 F150 which I love dearly. It has been one of the most comfortable and reliable vehicles I've owned. There is something to be said for the strength of a unibody and modern computer aided design over a body on frame. I think the UK show Top Gear did a crash test of a Smart at over 70 mph and the windsheild didn't break. If I remember the cabin was pretty much in tact but I think if real people had been driving they'd still be pretty messed up.

I've always had the opinion that most 'SUVs' are just fancy trucks and licensing should reflect this.

Pickups are so extremely unsafe.

firstly is the poor weight distribution. This is not at a performance aspect, but more so just general handling characteristics. Since all the weight is up front because of the cab, engine, etc, there's no weight in the back because all it is, is an open bed. That makes the rear wheels too susceptible to loss of grip. The set up of a live rear axle and torsion bars makes it a double whammy.

Altogether, pickups are just two steel girders with a bed and a cab and an engine up front with wheels. There's almost no occupant safety.

And yet...the pickup is the most commonly sold vehicle in the US...more so the F150 is the most commonly sold car in the world.

Pickup is not only the most versatile vehicle, but usually one of the cheapest.
Compare the price of F150 with entry level Mercedes.
I own F450 btw, but the body is long way (up) from F150
