Can a W124 run w/o Air Pump?

During a long drive from MA to NY, My Air pump came lose and started hitting the radiator.

My Mechanic told me he can remove it and run the engine w/o the air pump..since the part and labor will run me into 1K+ , it can this is the cheapest way...

he plans to run a smaller belt that doesn't go over the air pump wheel.

He said air pump is only used for the exhaust system..

Is he right? Is this safe to do? Opinions?

Without the air pump, the converter won’t be able lower the HC or CO levels as it normally does. Eventually you'll need a new cat as well. Aside from being illegal, removing the air pump *may* result in you failing the sniffer part of a smog test. If this car was in California, you’d fail the visual as well.

If your pump is broken, a rebuilt pump is $300. The two air valves are $15 each. Those are retail prices for a 91 300E (I have no idea what year your car is).

Rather than tossing the air pump, I'd get a second opinion.

Yes, you can run without an air pump except (1) I doubt your mechanic's ability to supply a proper belt without one, and (2) you'll never skate past an emissions test that way.

you may only need a clutch, which i believe is available but to get you home, remove it and try to find a shorter belt. no harm will be done assuming he can get it done.
