I don't think so...

If you can even take CR car reviews seriously at all, keep in mind that they use RELATIVE measures of reliability, NOT ABSOLUTE measures. In other words, CR measures reliability compared to a class average. A car that is relatively reliable can still have a huge black circle just because it falls slightly below the average in its ranking.

For example, lets say that there are 10 categories that CR uses to measure overall reliability in its flawed annual survey. Car A has receives a score of "excellent" in each category. Car B receives a score of "excellent" in 9 categories but "very good" in 1 category. In absolute terms, car A and car B both rank high in reliability, but in relative terms, car B scores "below average/poor" in reliability.

Your average simpleton Toyota buyer picks up this rag and sees the half black or full black circle next to some car and thinks the engine will explode as soon as its driven off the lot. This simply isn't the case.... unfortunately CR doesn't try very hard to make this clear to its readers.

I remember a few years ago when I was looking to purchase a BMW X5, I casually looked over the annual CR reliability report just for laughs. I saw the overall reliability rating for the X5 was "poor." I then turned to the detailed reliability rating of the BMW X5 and saw that in every category it had scored at least "average" and mostly "good" or "excellent." In other words, a reliable car made to look unreliable by the hacks at CR who accurately assume that most readers don't read the fine print or investigate the details of their rankings.

CR... what a crock... they should stick to reviewing toasters and dishwashers.

Lol, did you see the latest comparo where they gave the Toyota LS460 a higher ranking than the Merc S550? They bascially admitted that the S500 was better at everything except gas mileage and "user friendliness". Better ride, better comfort, handling, brakes, engine... you name it. Even the fit and finish was deemed better on the S. Yet somehow the Lexus Celsior came out on top? Just goes to show you what kind of people CR cater to...

Give me a fucking break.

I understand what your saying, but keep in mind that CR sends out surverys to actual owners, so those results you see but don't agree with are coming from people who spent their hard earned money on these vehicles. Now as for Lexus beating out MB, I am not surprised one bit. Like it or not, Lexus has become the luxury standard, not just because it has rated high for this year or last, but it has rated highly since it's inception. I still have car magazines from the first year when the Lexus LS first came out, where they compared all the Luxury cars in that segment - MB, BMW, Jaguar, Infiniti and so on. Guess what? Yes, the Lexus was tops, and it's pretty much been that way every year since. Now, tell me again how long the MB has received such critical acclaim as you state? (not talking about pre-lexus times but only after the W126 ended production) What, one year now since the newest S class lineup was inroduced? Yet the Lexus has had *consistent quality* since it's inception, so come on, give credit when it's due...Toyota really did their homework with this vehicle.

I'm also not exaggerating when I tell you the only bitching I hear from my friends who have an LS is that sometimes they have issues with the backup camera on the newest models...THAT'S IT. Hell I wanna get an LS just from the stories I hear of how the Lexus dealers treat them like royalty when they come in just for an oil change...including offering them a free latest model Lexus loaner car if they can't hang around, and I've heard this from people who have the older early 90's LS' I guarantee you that if I drove into my MB dealer with my '85 500SEL and requested a loaner car while they did my oil change all I would get are laughs. If Consumer Reports based their ratings solely on their criteria and judgement, there would be plenty of room to be critical bud, but since their ratings are based on surveys sent out to actual vehicle owners, thats more than I can say for any other mag that is paid by sponsors to say only nice things about their vehicles. CR may not be perfect, but no other organization gives such insightful and non-biased information as they do. Last but not least, how in the world can you judge these new Benz' to be great, when they have only been out a short time? Most cars when this new are wonderful, and only time will tell if they are really worth their price -W140 & W220 owners were really happy in the beginning to, and look at the quality issues their... Lexus has nothing to prove, they walked the's MB who needs to get back their credibility and customer trust again. I hope they do, because I hate what this brand has become - a nice looking car with an awful reputation for quality.

You need a reality check

My 06 has been in the shop 11 times (12 is this Wed) not even 2 years old yet

My neighbours 07 has been in 5 times already

Some people get lucky - no probs - but recent models hare like russian roulette - but two rounds in the chamber

But then I would get the nice comments from people who appreciated a car with alot of chrome, landau roof, distinctive styling such as the opera window on my Mark VI, and the Continental wheel on the back. Nowadays, you can't buy new cars with this much elegance, personality and styling, unless of course you spend tons of bucks on a Rolls or Bentley. Then there was the transformation that would happen when I would give a friend a ride home: Suddenly, when they relaxed in my Lincolns big, pillowy chairs, stretched out their legs, and felt that soft, plush ride, they would get this smile on their face as if they never knew a car could be this comfortable, and would compliment me on my choice of vehicle. =)

What's really funny is how my friends from Germany and Europe reacted to my car. To them, Benz's are no big thing, or as one of my friends puts it, "we use MB as TAXIS for god's sake, so why should we be impressed?!" They would always marvel at all the chrome and electronic gadgets my car had, and I would always remind them that like all cars when these electric goodies would go bad, the big difference is that on my Lincoln they were relatively easy and cheap to repair, unlike my Benz. But in the USA, MB will always be a sign of affluence & success, so I can understand why so many americans revere this car, just like I always have. Now as for somebody making the comment about the old Panther platform it is on, my response would be why fix it if it ain't broken? Throughout the 80's, Cadillac kept introducing new models and instead of working out the problems, they just kept creating new ones, while Lincoln kept the Town Car the same and it was pretty much bulletproof. I'm all for change, but not always if it means sacrificing something that is working just fine for something unproven and risky.

By the way Cascade, if you ever want to get into a Lincoln, I would suggest getting anything above 2004, as thats the year the newest styling cues came in that are still their today, and according to JD Powers from '04 up to now are the best years for these newer Town Cars. Not to mention the incredible deals you can get on them now, even on the designer series like Signature, Ultimate and Cartier, and you can even find the Town Car L versions on ebay, the ones that have the extra 6 inches of rear leg room and rear climate controls and other goodies. From a new car buyer standpoint, their depreciation is horrible, but for a used car buyer, if you just wait a year a two, you will avoid that money loss and get a great deal on a solid and classy car.

You may be interested to know I couldn't wait any longer, and I finally pulled the trigger and several days ago, went and bought a one year old 2009 Mercury Grand Marquis LX in Norsea blue metallic and I adore it.

MSRP was $28,300 and all I paid was $15,993 at the local Lincoln Mercury Ford dealer, for a Hertz rental return with 24k on the clock, and the floor mats gone (that I already bought new ones from the dealer)

It's great I finally was able to get one of the last ones before production ends forever, next year.
