I ask again, is it necessary to have a B service at 10,000 miles.

Thanks.
Drive it to reach normal engine temperature, remove the oil filter, drain the oil, re-plug, put a new filter and fill with new oil. No need for specific flushing. Use the new rings from the oil filter package. Start and let the engine idle until oil gets everywhere.

What does your service manual list for B-service? I would still bring the car to dealer service and get the service letter stamped, even if oil was changed at home. A dealer should not be far even from the middle of the Sherwood forest and they should properly compensate for the home made oil change.

I'm not an expert but I believe forum members who really are experts on modern engine oil issues and the advice is that a too frequent oil change may be worse for the engine compared to what the FSS says. I'm not referring to this 5000 mile figure or any other, better if everybody reads experts' views and decide themselves.

Hey, DB. I was indeed referring to the first oil change interval. It may be old school, but there's a lot more wear in those first miles as parts adjust to one another, it's probably less significant nowadays with better engineering and tolerances, but that's something I started doing long ago, just change oil out of a new engine much sooner than the "recommended" interval.

Thereafter I would generally follow manufacturer recommendations, and do follow -- and recommend others follow -- the FSS for newer MB cars, much for the reasons you reference.

Bobclive, I too would recommend you change it at normal operating temperature, no flush needed. I would suggest you also install a new crush washer on the drain plug, very cheap even at the dealer.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

I live in Jersey (a small 9x5 mile rock off of France, not NEw Jersey) and the dealership here (we only have 1) are pretty insistent that we do a B service after 2 years. I refused on the basis my C350 had only done 6500 miles but they tell me an oil service may not keep up the warranty. Can MB cancel the warranty if I don't have a B service (at £458, over $900 to you in the US)

A lovely island you have if it still is the same from my visit years ago, I guess the price to pay for that is expensive car service. I've never paid anything like that from a B or higher service (after changing oil myself).

Anyway, I would assume the dealer being able to cancel warranty if you did not have the B-service done. At least that would be for any issues that could be close to that touched by the B-service.

I wonder if it would be cheaper in France, I assume they would have to accept the service done by another dealer.
