Unhappy Key woes

As my signature indicates, I have a 90 SL500 6L AMG. It was built in Germany, then imported to Japan, then to Canada. It's got a German VIN #, so the VIN shows as invalid on US sites. When I bought the car, I only got one key, with remote. I phoned around and all the INDY's told me I had to go to the steelership to get more keys. Off I trundled and ordered another remote and two "normal" keys, to the tune of $300. Well, two weeks later the keys arrived, so I went to pick them up. NONE of them worked! They had taken my VIN and acknowledged that it was a Euro version. They tried to tell me that the car was most likely a slavage and the VIN under the hood was not the VIN of the body / locks. By the shape and wear showing on the car, I very much doubt that. The key I do have fits ALL the locks, so I know the previous owners did not just replace the driver's door and ignition or something.

So, now they want me to make an appoinment to have a lock removed and sent off to have keys matched to the lock. They think they can take apart the remote key, which was $232 alone, and just replace the "key" part.

When it came time for any discussion of additional costs, they were quite surprised that I would expect them to assume ANY costs.

I was up front and told them of the import, the car was there if they wanted to check anything, but all they wanted was my VIN to order the keys.

I'm not sure what the end result or bill will be, I was wondering if anyone had similar experiences and/or thoughts on mine.

I'll keep you all posted, lest you find yourself in the same situation.
