ctbenztech must have referred to the reset button you tried, the one used for resetting the trip meter. The procedure may have changed over different W202 models, you may find additional advice from the 202 forum, this is what I picked up:
A.) Turn key to position 2.
B.) Within four seconds press button 1 twice.
C.) Present status will be displayed. Within ten seconds turn key to position 0.
D.) Press and hold button 1 while turning key to position 2. Present status will be displayed again. Continue to hold button 1. After ten seconds signal will sound, and display will reset to 10,000 miles.

I understand that a user manual has been lost on a 1997 car, but it would still be a good idea to find one (perhaps a pdf copy, also the original paper copy from a dealer may not be expensive at all).

I hope you get more advice, meanwhile you might want to search some of the W202 posts.

Door closed.

You can get a manual from your dealer or from MBUSA at 1-800-FOR-MERC(CEDES). You are missing out on a whole lot of good info without that manual.

You say you went to MBUSA and nothing was there. Did you register at the owner's online section? Are you driving a US spec car? The reason I ask is the Owner's Online section may not accept ROW vehicles.

You haven't filled out your profile. In this case, the profile would be useful because I could determine whether you're in the U.S.
