1 malfunction

I recently bought my 03 SL500 and it consistantly shows "1 malfunction" in the dash display. When I purchased the car I was told this was because of either the teleaide or phone being disabled. Does this sound ligit? Can Mercedes flash the computer or do something to make this go away?

yes it does sound right as long as it dosent say visit workshop.
mb now can remove teleaid from cars. if you have analog teleaid and dont want to upgrade to digital they can turn it off for a minimal fee. it has to be a mb dealer

The display does not say what the malfunction is and there is no mention to visit the workshop. It is a analog system I don't care to upgrade to digital.

Mike, are you saying the dealer can make the "1 malfunction" notification go away? Or, hopefully not, will I have to live with the display?

Thanks for the fast replys guys....

I'm not familiar with the SL but on a W211, W221 and even a W210 that was older than your 03 SL, it was possible to read the stored malfunctions from the instrument cluster menu. Would be almost useless to show the number of malfunctions otherwise, like a burnt bulb message hidden by another, higher priority message.

I would suggest reading the car manual to figure out how to read the messages (unless someone confirms that on 03 SL does not support that).

Send a message via AIM to johnhef
use the arrows to scroll though the menu to determine what your malfunction is. if its a tele-aid message, yes they can deprogram the cluster so it thinks the car doesn't have tele-aid.

yes they can make the malfunction go away. im asuming that it is a teleaid malfunction since the delaer selling it said so. scroll to the malfunction using the page up/down button then use the +/- buttons to see the error, or the up/down arrows. let me know what you have and ill tell you how to get rid of it.

Update is that when I get to the display that shows "1 malfunction" and then use the + or - buttons on the steering wheel I show SOS in the left display and autorize in the right display.

Further pressing of the + or - buttons puts me back to mileage on the left display and "1 malfunction" on the right display.

Mike....... I would like to make the "1 malfunction" go away...... any help would be appreciated..... Thanks Dan

You might want to go to a different dealer. That problem should have been taken care of before you bought the car. All Malfunctions can and should be Reset by anyone who can check Error Codes and fix them. It will only take a minute, and they shouldn't even charge you for it. As long as the Malfunction is "fixed" the message should go away, and even the TeleAid being disconnected should not be a problem for any dealer who knows what they are doing.

Don't believe everything you think

The above will tell you what the malfunction is. when it is showing use the + or - key to read it
