That is regretable, but the new models introduced since 2004 have all been fully galvanized, so this should not be an issue any longer, for buyers of new ones.

2008 Mercedes-Benz B 200 5 speed
2006 smart BRABUS Tailor Made Canada 1 cdi cabriolet
2013 Ford Fiesta SE 5 speed, for the kids

From a guy living in the "rust-belt"... (Southern Sweden)
Galvanizing does not make stainless - it only slows the process down! Low quality sheet metal will corrode as soon as enough zink is consumed!
And aluminum will corrode, too in salty conditions. It is not better, just different!

You can see a lot rusty W211 here for sure. The W210 and W211 are some of the most corroding cars of all in this country, in spite of their 30-years warranty.
The corrosion is both inside out and outside in. Many owners have tried to claim their cars, but Daimler Chrysler Scandinavia has been very reluctant to do anything and sometimes directly arrogant.

Even in this area, the "premium" MB are fare below AUDI, Volvo, Volkswagen, Renault, SAAB, BMW, Lexus etc.

-91 190E 2.6 Sportline 5-speed (now sold)
-92 300TE -24 valve (now sold)
-95 Lexus LS 400 (all options except sunroof)
-91 SAAB 900i -16 (just over 80.000km)
-06 Renault Clio (daily beater)

What is it that you have to do to keep the 30 year warranty in force? A periodic inspection or something? What does it cost? To have a 30 year warranty on rust prone cars there must be a catch.

A catch? Sure...
The condition is that you do ALL maintenance inspections, and do them at an authorized dealer. In the end that extra cost (of going to MB dealer vs indy for all services) will easily finance a new car, trust me...
And MBSC sometimes STILL refused to fulfill their responsibilities when owners came in with 3 or 4 year old rusty cars with full maintenance records...

Great company! I'm so proud of them. I like to think of Mercedes Benz as two different companies - the old one, that made quality, long lasting products, and the new one, prone to buffonish stunts like this. I don't know the exact cutover date but I wish they would have changed the name because they're driving down the value of my old one.
