Hey, V-C.

Probably a whole lot more than you wanted to know, eh? I realize that ctbenz's axe must be fully sharpened by now, clearly he's in favor of a benz. Ultimately, however, this is your mom's decision to make.

You might consider having her read this thread. There are some good points made across the board in here. And while I've stressed some things both ways, I hope I've come across somewhat balanced, I certainly don't mean to lean too much either direction. There are strengths and weaknesses on both sides here.

And I have to say that all the negativity in here re: Japanese cars hasn't been anywhere close the experiences I've seen or those I know have seen. Too, for all the positive things asserted re: MBZ, there are always threads like this one: (and you can read some of buymybenz's other threads for even more, or you can just cruise the various forums in here, clearly MBZ has (ahem) some reliability issues, both new and used).

The bottom line -- and I'm sure you understand it -- is that your mom is doing the very best she can and making the best decisions she can both for you and for her -- and for her transportation. So offer her any information she wants, any you feel is appropriate, and then support her fully no matter what she decides. Many, many years from now you won't remember what car she bought, but the relationship you develop as you move along into manhood will benefit you both.

Take care and enjoy the ride,

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. (Winston Churchill)

did your mom already decide on which car to buy?

Definitely if it needs to be NEW, the Subie is warmly recommended. I know - if there would be an MB C300 wagon with 4-matic with a similar price tag, we would have gotten that one.
We ordered an Outback XT yesterday. Can't wait.

Look, if you want real advice, listen to me...I won't steer you wrong.

She needs to buy a brand new G55. I know, I know, just calm down and take a deep breath. It satisfies everyones needs. It has LEGENDARY all wheel drive the will NEVER allow her to get stuck. Never. It has plenty of room for all those IV set ups, foley catheters, colostomy bags and vials of blood. For you it has a monster V-8 engine that will rocket you around the suburbs like a baller.

What, the price? Listen, this truck will last 25-30 years easy. Tell mom to take out a nice 2nd mortgage on the home. This will keep her monthly nut down to a reasonable amount and everyone will be happy! Trust me!

30K car

Definitely the Outback. If that's too big then the Forester-that is on the smaller Impreza chassis. Reliable, economical to run, excellent in bad weather, and unless mom has to have the turbo version it runs on REGULAR GAS-no small consideration these days. . Holds value quite well also. Should be able to get a nice deal on a 2007 leftover Outback for about $23K to $25K or so well equipped-perhaps a bit less for the Forester. That way she'll have 5 to 7 grand left over to help you with your Mercedes repair bills. Don't buy a Benz unless you want your car to spend more time in the dealer's service dept. than on your driveway.

(dumping the P.O.S. 2003 C240 4 matic wagon (38K miles and 26 trips to the dealer) in favor of a new A6

For about 35K she should buy a Volvo XC70. Great in the snow, safe, luxurious, great warranty, great resale value and the car will last forever.

Blech. Don't fall for the hype from a Volvo troll. Yeah , Volvo's last forever ... if you replace the whole darn car at $$$.
