i thought benzes were built to last 20yrs/250k miles??

CR did a report on the $ you save by keeping the same car for 15 years, and then gave a list of 10 best cars to own for 10+ years, and 10 worst cars. guess what, not a single Benz or BMW made the 10best list, instead they were all shoved in the 10 worst list. "Cheap" toyotas & hondas dominated the 10best list.

this doesn't make any sense, shouldn't the MBs costing 3-5x more than the toyotas last 3x longer???

Gone but not forgotten:
2003 Honda S2000
1999 BMW 540i sport
1995 BMW M3

they make the worst cars to own over ten years becuase of the cost of up keep.
a honda you can go to auto zone and buy cheap parts. mb most autozone parts are junk. and are still more expensive then honda or toyota parts. i own a 7 year old ml with 140,000miles on it. its more reliable then my mitubishi because i get parts less then my dealer cost with no labor cost.my mitsu parts cost more for me then my benz parts. but for most people owning a bmw or a benz is extreamly expensive.

example. MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR cost for mb= $300-500+1.5 hours to reset you adaptations.
cost for a honda/toyota=$150 and you dont need to reprogram your computer

Give me the same data set, let me choose my variables, and I'll show you that Benzes are better. Come on, every experience is different. I've never owned a Honda (I see you own two), but I'm open to it if they ever push my buttons like my Benzes did, do, and will!

Because the cheap cars have less things to break. There's my BS answer for the day.

In all seriousness, I call BS on that article. See you in 250k miles.

Who would "want to" drive a Honda Civic for 15 years?

When you compare sledge hammer with stereo, which one is going to be better to keep for 20 years?

Not surprising.

Except for the diehards on this board and those working for MB, most owners
give up after their 10th $$$ repair.

Has anyone seen what a Honda or Toyota at that age looks like? Most of them around here are beaters and driven by people who I doubt have auto insurance! My old Benz which is a 1994 E still looks nice! My ex has it as his daily driver and there is 250k miles on her with the original engine. Of course things were replaced from wear and tear on parts but that car still runs as smooth as my 2002 E class. All the maintenance was done on it and it shows by how it looks and runs. Not as computerized as the newer ones so cheaper to maintain. Look a how many older MB's you still see on the road. I wouldn't keep a Japanese car as long as I keep my MB's. They just don't age well IMO. Maybe cheaper to maintain but I like driving a nice looking car as well. I saw the same report and rolled my eyes BTW. interesting how Chrysler lured away the head honcho from Toyota and other top of the notch car executives to turn it around.

Someone once stated on the board

You want dependability by a Honda. You want class, power, and style buy a Mercedes.

It is all about maintenance you have to understand this aspect when you purchase a european vehicle.

Some do, some don't, some will, some won't, but I might!

30 year lifespan, deconstructed

Bruno Sacco, the legendary and famed designer of the W123, W124, W126, W201 and (with Paul Bracq) the legendary 600 Pullmans, explained that the life cycle of a typical Mercedes Benz model at the time (ie, 1960s through 1990s) was about 30 years:

Product and design development cycle = 8 years

Length of time model offered for sale = 10 years

Normal expected lifespan of vehicle = 10 years

Total (approx.) = 30 years

That model has seemed to have held true, at least until Bruno Sacco retired in 1999.

A lot of old ones really keep going and going. They were engineered to do so.
