I don't have a problem using valets, but I prefer to park myself.
I've always followed the rule of parking a long way out. Unfortunately, twice that has met with disaster by people REALLY hitting it. I think when you're way out there, someone is turning around or something like that, they don't think there are any other cars, and then they smack it while backing up or something. I still park in the boonies, but it really irks me. I'd probably be time, frustration and money ahead to just park in close, door dings PDR guys can take out for a couple hundred, basketball-sized smacks with paint damage are a different story.
Bogie, oh, heavens, can I sympathize. Last TG I was in Phoenix, parked in the outer remote loop at Metrocenter, one other car out there, I parked away from him. I come out, there is a minivan on my passenger side, so close I have no idea how the driver got out. But there was a divot out of my paint from their door, clearly the &*$&^%$(*_ driver didn't care and just whanged the thing open. I debated whether to do anything to her POS town & country, in the end I chalked it up to humanity.
Take care and enjoy the ride,
Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. (Winston Churchill)
