Question What OBDII protocol MB C280 uses?

Hey all, I wanna buy USB diagnostic tool (OBD2 Scanner) but I found many products supporting different protocols... so I have questions, what protocol is supported by C280 '97
and what is the diference between protocols?

Tnx!

I'll answer the first part of the question - CAN (control area network). Go to Manuals Unlimited, register, and you'll see they have one for $80. I have one, it works great. Provided you just want to check and clear codes. There are other scanners available that do far more for under $400.

There are too many OBD-II protocols for me to discuss them all here. In a nutshell, the CAN protocol is a shift in direction from earlier technologies. Rather than using one computer to control and keep track of everything, a distributed system of computers is used where each computer has it’s own area of responsibility.

ok tnx
although I thought that CAN standart was ratified on 2003
But if MB implemented it ealier then its better for me since it has like 20000 times faster data transfers.

As to the scanner on Manuals Unlimited, its not good for me. I need the one that has USB out so I can hook it up to my computer, I wanna see more detailed info about my car so at least i can fix many problems ( i hope) and also coonect the car onbord computer with my external device that im working on so my car will have something from airplanes onboard

Thankfully, CAN became the federal US spec standard beginning with the 2008 model year. With one protocol, I think we, the consumers, will be better off.

Digimoto may have what you're looking for. It's a lot more than a scanner.

$39

OBD 2 w/can harbor freight tools, online or local if you have one of there stores near by.Reads all codes, book of inst. and codes,cd of all the codes, reads i/m status for smog testing, powered by obd port under the dash, resets codes when you are done with the repair. If you need more then that and want to go deeper in,which most backyard mechanics, don't need to,you can get the autotap obd plug to lap top cable and software for about $180 on line,it is a real time data acquisition system and captures more then just codes like the centek reader.
have fun with the new toy
