Safety Ratings...What Do They Really Mean?

So we're thinking about our next car and I was wondering about the safety and crash test ratings of cars. Do they really mean that much? How much safer is a MB when compared to a Japanese or Sweedish vehicle of the same class? Obviously weight is a factor but does anyone have any thoughts. I'm thinking if they all fair the same in tests, why not consider an M45 or GS400? I know from our SL, the driving experience is part of what buying an MB or BMW is what it's all about. Like I said, just starting to consider options for next year.Thoughts?

MB do their own crash testing which is a lot more extensive than just the NCAP testing. Just read these.

Its all about safety cells. Airbags dont do much when the front seats in the back.
