New with questions

My wife wants a used CLK convertible and she's looking at a 2000 CLK430 and a 2000 CLK320. The 320 has 1000 miles less and is about $1000 cheaper. Which would be the better car? The 430 has 63000 miles and the 320 has 62000 miles.

Also, is it possible to put a factory navigation system in these cars? I noticed they don't come with one.

Lastly, is there anything particular I need to look out for when considering one of these?

I'd buy the 430. Factory NAV units can be added. Here is a link to all the options, specs and prices for the 2002 model year. 2000 should be similar.

The normal wear items to watch for at this stage will include:
  • Both motor mounts
  • Trans mount
  • Brake light switch
  • Possibly the differential side seals
  • Flex dics
  • Possibly the catalytic converters
The cats can be the most expensive item. They need to be replaced when the ceramic cores separate from the metal shells. You can tell they're bad when they rattle just off idle. If you're under 8 years and 80,000 miles, the dealer will replace them for free. If not, and it's on your nickel, you may want to look at aftermarket alternatives.


The spark plugs should have been changed by now. Ditto for the transmission fluid. If not, I’d deduct that from the sales price.

I'd ask the owner to supply a VMI (vehicle master inquiry). A dealer can supply one for free.


Not so normal, but common wear items are the power seat motors. If you’re handy, each motor will take about an hour and with each part costing about $130 at the dealer. If you’re not handy the dealer will probably bill a couple of hours labor on top of the part.

Lastly, you may want to consider joining the Mercedes Benz Club of America. The parts and service discounts are more than enough to cover the yearly membership.

430 def is the better of the two
as a tech the clk are the most reliable car there are. if you have access to a lift when buying the car just check the rear end for leaks. those are the most common on any of our cars. i havent seen too many motor mounts go on those. like marcus said 60k should have been done. plugs, coolent flush, brake flush,
tranns service. if they havent talk them down a bit. then go get them done!
resale value will be much higher on the 430. plus there so much more of a car. vary fun and fast.

For that price difference I'd go with the V8 as well. I'd also suggest that unless you're quite familiar with the marque, a good pre-purchase inspection by someone who is can bring to the front many things you might easily miss. Sometimes they're deal-killers, sometimes it's just stuff you need to know, and sometimes they are things that can help you negotiate a better price. While at this point I might trust my own judgment, when I bought my 210 I was lucky enough to have someone familiar with the cars to go over it for me. All it cost was a plane ticket and a couple of meals to bring him along, then dropped him off on the drive back.

Sounds like I'm going for the 430. The guy selling it said the next service is due in about 500 miles. It has 63000 on it now. which service could he be talking about? Could it be the one where the plugs are changed? Or is there another service coming up at about 70000?
