New around here, and looking for a Benz.

Hello all,

I was just looking around for a Mercedes community, and this one seems pretty strong.

Here's the spot I'm in: I work for a Mercedes dealership while I'm in school. I'm the shuttle driver, and I do a bit of cashiering/booking/parts stuff on the side when they need me to. Shoot me a PM if you have any (reasonable) questions up that alley.

Obviously it'd be economical, relatively, for me to get an older Mercedes thanks to the generous parts/labor discount. (I can get a good discount on work for all makes, but obviously matching up a Mercedes tech to a Mercedes, rather than a BMW makes more sense.)

Problem is, I really want a car with a stick shift, and a somewhat decent amount of moddability (stuff like suspension, ecu, and typical bolt ons like headers, exhaust, cai, udp, etc.), and I'm not sure if Mercedes has anything up my alley.
Any advice?

I'm in the under $8,000 price range, United States market, and I do like the styling of the 190E, but they're nigh impossible to find with a stick, and I doubt it'd be worth the conversion?

Anyway, this is long-winded enough for a first post, so thanks for the read. Any advice is useful!

8 grands will not buy you newer diesel (I am talking 10 years or less) but will buy you lot of older diesels as well as very good gassers.
Forget about stick shift. To may knowledge they have NEVER been imported to US.
In 80's with favorable exchange rate, lot of stick shift MB have been privately imported, so they do exist from those years, but good luck on finding one.
Welcome to the forum. What is your offer? I need a part that is a size of cigarette pack, but cost around $400. Can you get me good discount?

Well I know for a fact that there are a bunch of 240D 4spds floating around the NW, but they're not sporty enough for me.

My buddy just picked up a 190E 2.6 5-spd (had US headlights so it must have been sold in the USA), but that's a rare rare combo as well. Im keeping my eyes peeled.

I'm not able to get discounts for parts for cars I don't own or that aren't in the family, so sadly that's out.

We're all one big Mercedes family on this forum. Does that count?

Haha. I'm pretty sure my boss wouldn't approve of me just handing out discounts left and right.

I'll give you a fairly interesting piece of information that I looked up at work today though.

The McLaren badge on the back on the SLR is listed at US $142.96! There's one in Germany..I'm still thinking about buying it at employee cost just so I can keep ahold of it, haha.

In all seriousness, the whole lack of decently quickish moddable Mercedes sticks under 10k has had me turned to the BMW side of things in my search for the perfect car. So all I was hoping was that there'd be some light here to shed.

If you're patient you can find a euro 300D with a manual shift. Someone on the 123 forum sold one recently for around $5000 I believe. He's in northern california. Good luck.

It was this car:

For Sale: 1981 300d European 4 Speed - ShopForum

I almost bought it myself. No air con and no place to put it. It was a beauty, and had all records, even from Germany, and the mileage wasn't high, and the color was beautiful.

I still think about it. They are almost as speedy as the US spec. 300D turbo, speed being a relative thing.

I have two 190's

a 1992 2.6 Sportline 5speed and a 1985 Euro spec 2.3-16 5speed

The cwap is not hard and 16vlv transmission are copious and are not hard to find a full setup to swap in. However if you trust your handy work the 190e 2.3-16 is a nice car but it requires a lot of maintinence and you need to stay on top of it. The 2.6 engine is notorious for needing a headgasket so if you look for one be sure to ask if the head gasket has been changed.

Other than that feel free to visit us in the w201 section.

I would check ebay. I know it's kind of weird purchasing a car online, but there are some hot deals on here!!!

Hi x440Magnumx,

Welcome to the forum and you're right about it being strong.

"asainml" is correct about it being one big family.

"alexnatt" is correct about having to be patient.

"kynyption" gave you a good idea about W201 2.3-16's.

IMHO, even with the automatic transmissions, i'd consider the W202's, either the C220 or the C280. There are a lot of modification parts available.

I used to have a modified W201 and W202 before shifting my interest on the R129.

Goodluck!
