2003 SL500 Stuck in Park
My 2003 SL500 Sport with 26,000 miles started shifting out of park last week a little rougher than normal. Now 7 days and 200 miles later it won't come out of park.
The brake lamp / shifter release switch at the pedal is operating fine, and I can hear and feel the mechanical mechanism inside the shifter unit as I press on the brake pedal / turn on & off the ignition. But it's obviously not releasing the shift lever or there is another safety restriction that I am unaware of that is not functioning. ( i/e: electric top not closed properly etc. )
There has been no on display malfunction whatsoever.
I have been able to get the shifter released on 2 out of 25 times I have attempted to give it another try. Both times seemed to have been just after I have opened or closed the electric top completely. Once released it will shift and operate fine, even go into and out of park, until it's placed back into park and the key turned off. Then it will again get stuck in park.
I have been told by MB that there only knowledge of this is if something has been spilled into the stick shift console, I have inspected this area thoroughly and found no indication of a spill.
Worst part is if I cannot get it out of park a 3rd time then the vehicle will have to be dragged out of my garage and onto a car carrier or out enough to be placed on rollers.
