Do Fuel System Cleaners Work?

I wanted to but a complete fuel system cleaner, octane booster, or fuel injector cleaner in my 300SE because its sluggish when accelerating and it has over 200,000 miles on it. I was wondering if these cleaners actually work and are they worth the $20. Thanks

I regularly use Chevron Techron Concentrate every 3000 miles in all of my cars. If they work, or not, is another question; I also use only Chevron gasoline which is on Kirill's list. MB recommends Techron and another privately labelled one that you can buy from a dealer.

You might have other things causing your sluggish acceleration, but I don't think you can do any damage by trying either of the ones I mentioned.

Another thing you can try is to have a compression and/or leakdown test performed on your engine. With 200,000 miles, your compression might be lower than it should be, which might indicate bad compression rings on your pistons.

Good Luck!

I used Techron Concentrate on my 1992 190E 2.6, the problem was it did not start instantly like I did in the pass, after using Techron, it started instantly again! I am a believer. Just follower the directions (gas tank should be near empty).

I drove Volvo till I junked it for cosmetic reasons with 176000 on it. Always bought the cheapest gasoline available. I think I used injector cleaner once, but as a precaution only. The engine was running perfectly when the car landed on junk yard.
I used diesel purge with good results on engines with more than 200k, but that is another story.

I use fuel boosters on my 1968 chevy caprice, but I would not try it on ANY model MB...these cars are very fickle and you should consider the best highest octane gas possible and don't worry about using fuel cleaners and boosters.

Techron, for the last 22 years (god I'm feeling old) in everything from an '85 Ford Mustang to my BMW Motorcycle (242K and still running) to an Accord that went 395K before I sold it (still running today over 400K) and the MB's I have now, along with everything inbetween. May not have helped them at all, but never had a fuel problem in any of them so I use it at least twice a year as a matter of ritual now.
