Regarding the lack of dipstick issue, I bought a CLK last month, I could not find a dipstick, reading the handbook, it explained how to measure the oil level using the steering wheel controls.
I was slightly worried that I could not check the dipstick to see the colour or general state of the oil as well as the level, electronic oil level could show a false reading, the dipstick will not, nor show the state of the oil.
I drive a Renault van at work, switching on the ignition before starting shows the oil level. In 4 years I have checked the dipstick twice only, as it corresponds with the electronic check I don't worry about it any more.
I suppose it all depends on who paid for the car. I paid £25,000 for my CLK and the lack of dipstick annoys me, my work pays for the van, and I'm happy to trust the electronics.
