leaving the mercedes brand

After 17 years of mb ownership , i am keeeping my options open for next purchase for these reasons.

why

---poor fuel efficiency -- similiar offerings from BMW 5 series are getting well into the mid 20 MPG where as w211 e500/e550 still gets mid teens.

---technology really lacking compared to BMW, Porsche WHERES THE F*** HYBRID?? Its about 5 years behind LExus Has One, Porsche Has One.

---for what you pay for , the resell , depreciation curve is terrible . Perhaps used car buyers know of MB's reliability woes of the early 2000's ..

--- the designs no longer excite me like the old w124 , w126 and the offerings from BMW, Porsche really Uped their stylish-nesss. the 5-series is way more stylish than w211 and so is the cayman S.

--- I went to test drive an 03 w211 and the car squeaked and made all sorts of noises with only 37K. I have a w124 with 175K that doesnt make so much noise

Just because one or two companies are doing hybrids doesn't mean everyone needs to. If you've been up-to-date with your information you would have known MB is working on a Bluetec Hybrid system.

there are many good cars on the market, you'd be foolish to keep buying MBs just b/c you've had them for a long time.

We'll be looking for a new car within the next year and I'm not sure if I want to stay with a Benz. Looking BMW, Infinity, Lexus. All have issuses but seem to be less than an MB. Hopefully they will get the problems worked out and get back to making QUALITY/LUXURY cars. It'll take them another couple of years to prove they have indeed turned the corner and dumped the Chrysler stigma. Along with improved quality and reliability, the rapid depreciation of MB's should slow as well.

I am not surprised you are soured on the brand after owning a 2003 American built ML, 2000-2006 were very dark years for Mercedes as regards quality control and certainly far away from 1989 when the engineers and not the bean counters and maketing gurus had the reins of the company.

The only thing Mercedes had consistently was SAFETY, throughout all the good times and bad.

Perhaps the last of the inarguably cost no object built cars that were also relatively problem free would be the W124 and W`126 setries

A lot of brand equity is being squandered by marketing these cars as nothing down $399 a month lease specials, and "anyone can now afford a Mercedes"

Given that it is not surprising you are disapointing and willing to look elsewhere, I don't blame you

I've heard it before that hybrids can take as long as 12 years of 15,000 miles ownership to make up the difference in the cost of fuel, over the premium of buying one. Thats not including the battery pack that has to be replaced every few years, and the proper environmental recycling that it needs. Besides, if anyone is buying a car over 50 grand and is worrying about the cost of fuel...well, they shouldn't be buying a car that pricey. Besides, Mercedes did experiment with hybrids.

As for the squeaking in the 2003, everyone knows that quality suffered for Mercedes in those days, but word on the street is that turning around again. Now that they dropped Chrysler and they can focus all the attention on premium luxury cars I believe things will be changing. I hope at least in time when I'm done with College and down the road when I can get a new Mercedes. We'll see. Personally I'd recommend a pre 95 model in incredible shape. I know plenty of people who could well afford a new one but drive a 420SEL for example in its place.

To add to the above lexus and infinity are good, but I'd steer clear of BMW, they are problematic as well. If you like "ze germans" Audi is an excellent choice. Had I not gotten a great deal on my 210 I'd be an Audi boy most likely.

FWIW, if you're getting teens for highway on the E500 something's wrong; even the E55 is low to mid 20s.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

And the jury is probably not in yet on 2007. In my view there's no reason to dump them - just don't buy anything after 1995 and you'll be OK.
