When I bought my W163 in 2001, the sales person told me that the paint used on the truck was water base so it is not as tough as those lacquer or acrylic paint. It has something to do with MB trying to be eco-friendly.
He warned me that the hood can get chipped easily. But, since the truck sits higher than most cars, the bumper cover, which is more durable because the water base paint adheres better on plastic, takes most of the beating.
He didn't mention, nor I experience paint peeling. Chipped hood, yes.
