If you don't see anything in the event log, you might need to turn on auditing. To do that, go to Start -> Run, and enter SECPOL.MSC. That'll fire up a GUI where you can set up the audit policy. Look under "Local Policies" -> "Audit Policy", and make sure "Audit Privilege Use" is set to log failures.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately this is not my computer and my friend is too far away that I could myself have a look at it. I've asked the user to send a few log files but did not receive them, I guess it was too difficult for him to figure out the folder I described and the files there.

I can always forward this info, hopefully he would either send the file to me or even better if he can follow the advice and fix the issue himself.

Thanks again.

OK, no worries. He can also use the SECPOL.MSC utility to assign the rights once he's found out which one he needs. "It's under Local Policies" -> "User Rights Assignment"

Yes it's an older version
Tried to load it in XP SP3 but it will only load on SP2
it did load (partially) in Vista under XP SP2 compatibility mode
but it wasn't functional after PM

I got a WIS 2006 copy with the car I bought., I finally got it to work on a IBM computer with the new Windows 7 OS. But after I ran it throgh some it popped up message that the CD was more than 3 months expired, and shut down. Well I changed date to Dec. 2006 and then it worked again. I did not know the disc had a time limit. These WIS disks seem not only very hard and frustrating to install., but not all that usefull when you get them going. Maybe someone that has a lot of experience with them can make heads or tails from them. There is a disc set on ebay, kinda expensive, but in demo seem much easier and more informative than WIS. Has anyone tried those?

You could be a bit more specific, an expensive disc set on ebay could be almost anything. Would you have a link to an example ebay item?

If it is SD Media, that is intended to support DAS (Xentry), if it is Star Finder, that is mostly the same documents as WIS plus illustrations of actual parts' locations in the car.

I just downloaded and installed the free Microsoft Virtual PC and XP Mode from Microsoft and WIS appears to work just fine. The only problem so far is that the virtual PC defaults to the highest monitor resolution supported. Setting the screen resolution to a lower value only reduces the window size rather than making the contents appear larger. Any way, the MS Virtual PC works in Win 7 and the price is free.

Give it a try and see if it works for you.

Yes, I did. An older version of wis, that was not supposed to work with vista. All i did was follow the install directions exactly, but before installing anything I went through and selected xp compatibility on all the exe and bat files. From there, I ran the first installation process as an administrator and haven't had any issues.
