When a vehicle retires

My lovely W140 seems reach its last pulse so I came to conclusion to retire this car.

I found few options here:
• Part out
• Send it to junk yard
• Send it to vehicle recycle program
• Donate
• Any other suggestions?

Regardless which avenue I choose, I have a question that what do I need to do in terms of paper works such as title, registration, etc?

It is California car.

Thank in advance for your precious answer.

You might want to explain what is wrong with the car, post pictures and such. There are folks in the 140 forum that might need a parts car.

If you decide to part it, it requires work and room. Strip all the parts that work, including things like injectors, fuel pump, ignition [that's an expensive part] throttle body, alternator, seat controllers [under the seats], radio...you get the picture and put them on the for sale section and then ebay. If you do it correctly you will have about 1,000 parts to sell.

After you have everything that you could possibly sell you call a "we buy junk cars" place and have them take what is left. They may pay you, you may pay them, depending on the service and if they think they can break even with the crush costs. Otherwise you get a sawsall and cut it up and take the parts to a recycle place. KEEP the B Pillar VIN and the Radiator frame VIN.

Call your DMV and tell them you scrapped the car. Take pictures and use the B Pillar if they require "proof".

In many cases, the charities will sell the car to a parts yard. They don't always sell them as drivable.

I donated my Explorer this year.

Donate or give it to someone who can use it.

I gave an 85 SEC (running but can't pass smog test) and a 92 300E (running with front end damage) to my Mechanic with no monetary compensation. He was able to use the SEC as parts car and fixed the E for his girlfriend.

My gesture started a very good and long lasting friendship/relationship which goes beyond being just his customer.

Remember, your junk may be someone's treasure.

Donating a car in California

I donated a 1991 Volvo to the "Make A Wish" foundation.

That was in 2003 as I recall, and the charity, a good one, by the way, provided the instructions and paperwork. A flatbed truck hauled it away (I was sad)

It was a running car, currently registered in California, and had the pink slip with no lien holders, at the time of the donation, and had the keys to the car.

I think the rules have changed only insofar as now the vehicle's actual market value is to be declared.

The charity hauled the car away and later auctioned it off in Benicia, and the buyer later called me to ask questions about it, and I was happy to answer.

The value of the car was allowed as a tax write off on income taxes the next year.
