Sounds to me like an aircon problem. Bacteria build up on heat exchangers over time and need disinfecting. Is it more noticable if you have run the air-con for a while & then turn off the air-con but keep the fan running. Does it smell a bit like sweaty socks? If it does, Halfords sell a product to clean & disinfect the air-con system. I have used it 2x inthe past on previous cars & if I recall correctly it is made by Comma. It's about £10-£12 a can. It's easy to use & works a treat.& makes the car smell nice.

guys, i am having the same problem in a 2004 c240 i bought in Dec 07 as Star Certified. The smell got more pronounced as the weather grew warmer (i am in Toronto). Changed the air filter fewdays back and it helped a bit but not fully. So, today M-B are doing the heater core desinfectant+ sealer+aromatizer treatment for 60 canadian $. Will update if it fixed my smelly vents.
regards, venelin

I always run in the last 5 minutes with the air off to stop the pooling of water in the garage from the dripping AC. Now I realize that it has other benefits as well.

When we get a smell in our cars, sometimes it's a little critter that has hidden in the wrong place and expired.
