Lets talk tow hitches C-280's

I'm looking for a tow hitch to pull my Harley on a small trailer with my 1995 C-280. Has anyone ever hitched one???

Thank you for your info

Thumbs down

a tow ball on a benz?

3 things:

1. the car will look like shit with a tow ball on it. personal opinion.
2. I don't think a C280 has enough power to warrant pulling anything heavier than the driver and a couple passengers.
3. Harley's are not made to be trailer queens.

good luck on whatever you do.....post a few pics for laughs if you don't mind.

a towball on a benz? ...haha...damn.

This has been discussed many times but the OEM MB tow ball hides when you operate a handle inside the trunk. Once the trailer is used, you don't really see the ugly tow ball

In Europe, MBs with half the power of the S280 pull four times more load than a Harley (OK, don't know how much it is, let's say at least twice the load).

I don't have an opinion on the last one but is it any better if the Queen is left home and cannot be seen at all. If you tow it, you can show it time to time "the real way".

I learned that the Euro ball is 50 mm in diameter and the US ball would be 2 ". Not sure if that is too much of a difference. Perhaps it is not allowed to change the trailer part to a European one to match.

C280 hitch

It was necessary to put a hitch on my 97 C280 Mercedes. There is only 1 that fits and is fairly unobtrusive. Expensive, you bet, but it is very hidden and fits with little mod to anything. Mainly, it doesn't require fiddling with thew rear bumper that apparently may set off the air bags if not done properly. Aesthetically lovely, no, but it does the job and tows a small trailer with my antique motors in it. To each his own!! It has plenty of power towing a 1000 lb. trailer.

Thanks all for the info, I know my C-280 has the power for a small trailer and I also know it won't look the best, but we are moving to AZ. and we need to haul the Harley, I found a tow bar setup sold by U-haul for 210.00 bucks, not sure if it will cost my first born to install, anyways we want to be able to travel in confront and still ride the bike on runs when we get to where every we decide to go.

Oldmotors1, do you recall where you bought the hitch setup?
Diesal benz, What do you mean by, "operate a handle inside the trunk" ?

Thanks

A C280 can easily pull a trailer with a motorcycle. If you don't like the looks of it later you can take it off. E Trailer only shows one hitch so there may be only one but Da'Lan is very good. It does look to be a fairly tough installation.

I mean what is shown in the figure. This is for the current W204, they seem to have changed the handle to a knob that you have to turn.

Note the mechanical firmness of the OEM hitch (this is for an E-class):
Ê*ò*ëîã

For light towing a simpler one could do, if your officials allow that (this is strictly regulated in Europe, the hitch needs specific approval).

The hitch was made by DaLan and cost around 400 Cdn. To install, there is a small amount of material to be removed from the muffler heat shield and a small section, about 5 square inches must be removed in the area of the left trunk floor to insert a plate and several bolts. This does not show nor does it affect the vehicle's strength. Install takes about 1 1/2 hrs and is rated an 8 out of 10, best done by someone who has done hitches before. You also need to get a "relay" type of wiring connector as the add'l load on the wiring will drive the light sensor crazy. A blessing is that the battery does not have to be removed, just loosened to install several bolts.
