Interesting info Marcus, thank you. Do you happen to know what this "fleece" is comprised of?

Thanks for all the input and suggestions guys. I changed the oil 13 months ago when I bought it (unknown mileage on the oil) and it was not so dirty. I am glad i did not wait on the FSS because I could have gone another year. The Fumoto valve is a drain bolt replacement that really simplifies the labor.

That's odd. MB went to the synthetic spec and fleece filter in 1998, but this filter came out in 2003. Since the one in the article is a polyester polymer, apparently there's lots more to this puzzle than "paper or fleece", in fact it might be "paper or plastic".

I can't find anything for the 1998 through '03 model years, but currently the spec is the Mann HU 718/5 and it is the "extended life" fleece polymer filter. That's what I've been getting through Autohaus for my '01, so I'm happy. I can't speak to other brands of fleece filters; there may be the "cellulose fleece" discussed in MM's post, but for Mann it looks like the only fleece once they offer is the "new and improved" one.

Still, as a general rule, I'd agree with Marcus that a year is plenty long enough for motor oil to sit before it's changed. If you only change it once a year and even if you take it in that's only about $10 a month.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that the fall of 2003 was the original release date for the fleece filter, or when MB began to use them. I guess I was reading between the lines and inferred that they improved upon the original fleece filter (and that the earlier ones had a cellulose component) sometime between 1998 and 2003, and maybe more than once. Are we even sure that Mann has been the OEM filter supplier for all of those years?

Ahh, I was working on the "more news" as you were replying.

I didn't read your post as suggesting the filter only came out in '03, I was reading and inferring just as you were. From what I can surmise you're on track: prior to the 03 filter "upgrade" the other fleece were from cellulose, that's been phased out (at least by Mann) and replaced with the polyester polymer fleece variety.

There's probably a benz guru who could say what the factory screwed in for the pre-03 filters, but if you're buying Mann now it doesn't matter. So far as I can tell the only fleece filter they offer for the Benz is their synthetic polymer.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Let's hope GermanStar sees this thread because he's been involved in the MB parts business for at least as long a time period as we are discussing. Thanks in advance Ron!
