I am in the market for a 1998-2001 SL500, and I have heard of an issue with these model years with the oil pan, bottom end of the engine having to be redone?, ANYBODY KNOW ANYTHING?. Thank you. John from Madera California

The 2001 500SL uses an M113. M113's have pressure cast aluminum blocks with forged steel cranks that are held in place with four bolt end caps and SIX bolt center caps. The rods are hollow forged steel single piece units that are hydraulically cracked. I thought the M113 bottom end was bulletproof.

What did you hear? What was the weak link?

oilpancrank issue

hi, i am looking at a 2000 sl 500, same engine? etc?, i had a person who's car i was looking at tell me about the troubles he has had, and the dealer had told him this was a real problem, 75 hundred dollar job, but that is why i am here to find out if he is blowing smoke just to sell his car to me. the car i am looking at is in la ca, amg sports pkg, loaded, new top line tires, always serviced dealer, 50k miles, just looks great, 20k price, with the mercedes warranty, i have to check to see how long etc, oh by the way, the rebuild on the guy's car was the whole bottom end of the engine. john

So do you think the guy ran it out of oil or drove over a parking block?

Seriously, the only significant, recurring issue I've heard of in (relatively) recent years concerning engine internals is the I6 head gasket issues (check the 123 and 124 forum). Never heard anything about the bottom ends on any benz engine.

My suggestion would be to do yourself a favor and have it inspected by a good indie familiar with the marque; if he uncovers anything you have a bargaining chip (if you still want the car) and if not you can relax a bit about the purchase.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg
