Window Regulator Failure
You are right that it is unfortunately a design flaw. I was told by a Mercedes service shop foreman that the problem has been fixed on the newest mercedes by installing a circuit breaker or other device that will prevent the breakage.
I suspect, especially since you report REAR window breakage, that you may be holding the switch down until the regulator breaks instead of touching the switch to allow the window to stop itself. As we roll down the window, we usually canot see the rear window reaching the bottom of its travel.
I, too, have replaced two rear window regulators, so I suspect the I am guilty of holding the switch too long. This, however, does not forgive Mercedes for creating the potential for such frequency of regulator breakage.
