Transfer case is used only in 4-Matic cars. Do you hear any grinding noise or the car feel any different? Did they explain why they want to replace the transfer case?
Transfer cases are very robust devices and relatively simple in design. They don't break easily.
There are 4 wheel drive specialty shops. Santa Clara Wrecking in Santa Clara, CA is one of these and the best around. I think the last time I changed the transfer case cost around $1000 on my Suburban. An output shaft retention ring snapped on it. I could have simply replaced the snap ring.
